Do you want to try a plugin, make a change, or just play with WordPress — without the risk of breaking your live website?
There is a simpler way than setting up a subdomain and a development server.

The service TasteWP.com gives you a clean, working copy of WordPress in moments. It runs for a few hours — long enough to test anything you need.
Just say yes to the terms, click "Setup", and in a short time you have a working WordPress. You get a web address for your test site and can start right away.
If you need more time, or want to share the space with a team, you can keep it going for a small amount of money. Otherwise, after a few hours it goes away on its own — nothing to clean up, nothing to worry about.
When you log in, you see the normal WordPress dashboard. There are often some plugins already there that you do not want, so just turn them off and delete them.
Your test WordPress is now ready.
To show that you can try absolutely anything on TasteWP — including things you would never put on your real website — let's look at the Doom plugin.
You can get it free from GitHub as a ZIP file. What does it do? It turns your WordPress into a place where you can play the old computer game Doom — the classic that ran on old machines with DOS. 🙂 Yes, that old legendary shooting game.
You put in the plugin, turn it on, make a new page, and add a "Doom" block. After you publish the page, a DOS copy of the game starts right away with the classic menu. You can pick an episode (for example Shores of Hell), set how hard you want it, and you are off.
This is of course something silly that you would not put on your real website. But that is exactly why it is great to have a test space like TasteWP.
You can try anything — plugins you are not sure about, or new things you want to test.
An even better use is to test whether different plugins work well together.
And when you are done, you simply log out.
